“Educators across the nation have been observing children’s waistlines expand,” according to retired principal and Peaceful Playgrounds founder, Dr. Melinda Bossenmeyer. “Pediatricians and legislators are starting to catch on.” One such example is new legislation throughout the state of Georgia brought forward by Sen. Joseph Carter (R-Tifton. ) He is promoting legislation (SB 506) that begins to address the epidemic of childhood obesity.

Ask any pediatrician across America and you will learn that they see children daily who either have or are at risk for obesity-related health complications. The most serious health risks include hypertension, Type II diabetes, and heart disease.

Few people realize the adverse economic impact of obesity on America’s economy. The costs are in the billions.

“A national strategic plan should address opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities, nutrition in school and at home, and removing junk food in schools and replacing them with healthy alternatives,” stated Bossenmeyer.

SB 506 in Georgia is a proactive attempt to take a step toward turning the tide on this wide spread epidemic. Schools across the nation should follow suit.

Peaceful Playgrounds is a research based program proven to get kids active on school playgrounds in recess and after school programming and is currently in 8,000 schools across the nation. Peaceful Playgrounds researched what went wrong on the average playground and came up with 5 solutions to the problems. The most recognizable component of Peaceful Playgrounds are the designs that are painted on the blacktop and burned in to the grass areas to add over 100 games to the playground. Peaceful Playgrounds also has an Instructional DVD Series that is great for rainy days or training your children or staff on how to play the games. Schools or PTA’s that are looking for the latest information on grants, childhood obesity, nutrition and playground safety can sign up for our monthly newsletter.
