U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Announces Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that children who have one hour or more of physical activity per day receive substantial benefits. In an effort to influence the obesity epidemic, the federal government has created a comprehensive list of recommendations for people of all ages. These guidelines describe the types and amounts of physical activity that can result in substantial health benefits and are broken down into categories by age and medical conditions.

In a press release that came out October 7th, HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt was quoted as saying:
“It’s important for all Americans to be active, and the guidelines are a roadmap to include physical activity in their daily routine.. The evidence is clear—regular physical activity over months and years produces long-term health benefits and reduces the risk of many diseases.” This is the most comprehensive guidelines of their kind and are based off of scientific research that was done over the period of more than a decade.
At Farmer’s Hat Productions, we created the award winning Bur Bur and Friends children’s book series, to educate kids about sports and outdoor exploration and to encourage families to get active. We hope this guide will serve as a resource to you and your family.

Yeah, kids do need to be more active than they are currently. My son rides his bike a mile and a half to school every day and a mile and a half back. It’s great exercise for him, but I’m disappointed every day when I see the bus picking up kids who live within sight distance from the school. Sigh.
