Award winning “Anna Goes Hiking” children’s book teaches kids about nature and the outdoors
Book Review: As the authors were we were writing the award winning children’s book, Anna Goes Hiking (ages 2-8), it brought up memories of their first hiking trips as children and the family values it gave. The book was written by JoAnne Pastel and Kakie Fitzsimmons, two moms who discovered an untapped a niche in the children’s publishing industry and decided to fill it. Their series, Bur Bur and Friends, uses a cast of multicultural characters who educate kids about sports, outdoor exploration and active play through their experiences.
The illustrator of the series, Lindsay Van De Weghe did such a beautiful job in this book of capturing nature and the feel of being out in a forest. The story was inspired by some friends of the authors who love to explore the outdoors as a family. Here is some additional information about this book and what makes it unique.
As the story begins, Anna does not know what hiking is so her parents explain it to her. Then, they take off on an adventure to a state park where Anna’s hiking adventure begins. Along the path, she learns about the outdoors and discovers nature. Anna and her family also spot deer, a woodpecker, a frog, racoons and so much more.
When the story is over there is a place in the back pages that will teach kids more about hiking and the outdoors. In this section of the book, kids can identify animal paw prints. Children will also learn more about each animal Anna spots along her journey. For example, the kids will discover how big the animals get, where they live, what they eat and much more.
Finally, there is a section that suggests what to bring or pack (see illustrations below) if you want to go hiking too. Among the many items you will see sunscreen, a walking stick, bug repellant, a backpack and more. It is a fun hiking book to read with kids and is a recipient of the iParenting Media Awards and the Silver Mom’s Choice Awards.
Anna Goes Hiking is the fourth book in the award winning Bur Bur and Friends childrens book series and retails for $14.95.
