Top 10 fun ways to help kids with their spelling words
January 26th, 2009Spelling is an important step in the literacy process and it is our job to make it a postive and fun experience for children. At Farmer’s Hat Productions, we had so much fun writing Bur Bur’s Boating ABC’s, winner of Learning Magazine’s 2008 Teacher’s Choice Award for the family, iParenting Media Award and Silver Mom’s Choice Award. We thought teaching kids to spell should be as easy as A B C! (pun intended) As a result, we came up with this list.
Below are some solutions we came up with. If you have suggestions or thoughts about some we have missed, or could a story that has worked well in your household, please share below!
1. Have your child create a story using all of the words or one sentence per word.
2. Write down the words in alphabetical order
3. Identify commonalities of the spelling list then say; “I think they are trying to trick us, let’s show them we know how to do this!”
4. Look up the meaning of the words in the dictionary and read the definitions to you
5. Keep a postiive attitude, try counting the number of letters in each word.
6. Draw a line under the part of the word that may be tricky and focus on that
7. Ask them to think of a word that rhymes with what is on the spelling list
8. In a notebook, write each word and number to 8. Have them write each word 8 times.
9. Play a game of hangman using the words
10. Tell them your experience of working with spelling words as a child
