Make plans to read with your kids this summer

May 8th, 2009

Reading books can be fun no matter what you are doing
By Paula Huddy, Librarian, Blake Highcroft School, Wayzata, MN

Research shows that children who read during the summer do much better in school when it starts again in the fall. On the other hand, children who do not read between school years show significant loss in the fall. Studies show that having elementary-aged children read just four to five books during the summer can prevent this achievement loss.

Reading should be fun and being actively involved is the best way to stress it’s importance. Visits to the library, book stores, or involvement in a summer book club could be enticements to read. If you show enthusiasm for reading, your child will feel it, too.

  • Create a list of books that you think would be fun to read individually and together
  • Post the list in a prominent place and check them off as you go
  • Perhaps purchasing a book of their choice can be the reward for meeting the challenge
  • Create a calendar of summer reading events
  • Plan special activities each week that involve and let the kids help to gain cooperation
  • Traveling in the car? Find signs with words that start with ABC’s in order
  • Go through a cookbook and choose some meals to make together

The importance of summer reading is paramount. Finding fun, meaningful ways to encourage your child to read in the summer will not only help her keep up in school, it will also help draw your family closer together.

i read to my little one but he doesnt seem to have much interest in books.

Hi Jenny, how old is your little one? I know smaller kids have shorter attention spans. In situations like that let them point to what interests them in the pictures and let him read to you. Thank you for reading our blog, we appreciate your visit!

  3. Anji Says:

I’ve taught many children and teenagers English as a foreign language during the summer months. They definately start the school year better because of it. It’s not just about extra lessons, reading or whatever, but about getting back into school mode after a long break.

Hi Anji, what a wonderful idea. It would be interesting to know which languages you taught and what tools you used to do that. Kudos to you!

Very nice and meaningful post. Our daughter is 4 and we make it a nightly ritual to read to her before going to bed.

    She loves it!

    Hi
Shortly I begin to volunteer at a tiny school, in the slum areas of Bangalore. Story books and the concept of story telling is new to this school and will be a new experience for these children as well. Frankly speaking, I am nervous. Wish me luck.
We did do well on our story book collection drive and the books should start rolling soon.

Hi Lubna, thanks for sharing your story with us. I believe you will do just great in story telling. It is terrific when we see kids relating to the characters and learning while they are doing it. Good luck to you and thank you for sharing your story. Please don’t keep us a secret!
